Birmingham Midshires: Britons are saving

Most Britons have six months of savings put away according to new research by Birmingham Midshires.

This figure is almost double the recommended amount, with the average Briton having £7,548 in liquid savings.

Jason Robinson, director of savings operations for Birmingham Midshires said the signs were the public were listening to advice.

"For a long time we’ve been vocal in recommending that Britons have at least three months salary in savings to cover those unexpected costs that lurk around the corner," he said.

"It is encouraging to see that we are taking heed of this message and are actually saving double this amount."

Men are statistically better savers than women with an average of £10,012 stashed away compared to women who put aside on average £4,443.

The research also showed that southerners (outside of London) have an average of £10,199 saved compared to northerners with £4,095.

Despite this most Britons are still in debt and we spend approximately ten per cent more than what we earn.
