Barclays Insurance: Subsidence claims set to soar

Barclays Insurance says subsidence claims are expected to soar in the coming months as Britain recovers from an exceptionally hot and dry summer.

Buildings often shift after such heatwaves as the soil under the foundations is dry and loses its capacity to hold weight.

"Whilst some areas of the country, such as the south are more prone to subsidence than others, the unusually hot weather will mean that more houses across the whole country could be affected," said Mark Till, marketing director at Barclays Insurance.

"Last year we saw a sudden peak in subsidence notifications around August and September time and we predict that this figure could be even higher this year given the unusually dry year we have experienced."

To protect properties homeowners can prune trees near their house which draw on the moisture in the soil.

Signs of subsidence can include growing cracks in the wall, and doors and windows that have become wedged.
