Direct Line Travel Insurance: £1.5bn holiday goods go missing

Airport theft has made headlines this past week because of Lindsay Lohan's lost Hermes bag and millions of pounds worth of jewels.

But even the average British traveller is not safe from missing items when returning from a holiday.

In the past three years, Brits returning to the UK have lost £839 million worth of possessions and had over £600 million stolen.

Direct Line Travel Insurance research shows that individually, 12 per cent of holidaymakers have had over £500 worth of personal belongings stolen in the past three years.

Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line, says that people not taking out travel insurance are making a huge mistake, considering the statistics.

"We would advice all holidaymakers to protect themselves by taking simple, sensible precautions and by making sure they are insured against any loses in case the worst happens," he said.

The items most commonly left behind or stolen are clothes, sunglasses and cameras. After an expensive holiday abroad, many people are not able to replace the missing items. .

Direct Line Travel Insurance promises to replace anything missing or stolen with the same product, of equal value and, when sunglasses can cost around £200, insurance is a small price to pay.
