Have you ever sat in traffic during school rush hour and wondered how many cars are on the road?

According to online insurer Swiftcover, 4.5 million drivers are dropping children off at schools around the UK every morning.

According to the study, ten per cent of morning drivers are mothers taking their children to school.

Even with the benefit of public transport choices, parents still see driving their own cars as more of a convenience.

"It's understandable that parents take the travel option that's quickest and easiest for getting their children to school on time," says Andrew Blowers, chief executive officer at Swiftcover.

Mr Blowers says that public transport can be the more attractive option, thus freeing up the roads, with some encouragement.

"If the government wants to reduce congestion in urban areas and encourage parents to stop making the school run by car, there needs to be increased availability and promotion of the public transport alternatives," he said.

With the current worries about climate change and carbon emissions, fewer cars on the road could save more than time.
