Credit card 'could offer big benefits' for students

As the new university year starts, many students will be weighing up their financial options to find a way to make their money last longer.

One industry expert says choosing a credit card could have "big benefits" for students if they use their plastic sensibly.

Jemma Smith, a spokesperson for the payments association Apacs, says that as long as students live within their means, credit cards can offer them "a very flexible and convenient" option for short-term borrowing.

Those who do choose to borrow on a credit card are advised to shop around for the best deal.

Ms Smith says students should be aware of the various credit card deals available – each with different features and functions.

"We want people to realise that they would be doing themselves a disservice if they didn't look at all the products available," she adds.
