Holidaying Brits' attitudes 'changing'

British travellers abroad often suffer from the stereotypical view that they are unwilling to experience local cultures – but this is no longer the case, according to a new survey.

Travel insurance provider Saga has found that as many as 87 per cent of British tourist overseas are now proud to say they make the effort to try foreign cultures and cuisines when they are away.

And two in three even admit they try dabbling in the basics of foreign languages.

The survey, which offers a new insight into the changing attitudes of British tourists in foreign countries, also revealed that only nine per cent of tourists look for British menus while overseas.

However, this is not yet the case in France, where 50 per cent of British travellers admit to taking their own food with them.

Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, explained: "As our tastes at home become more multicultural, holiday makers are increasingly keen to try local dishes when abroad.

"However, it would seem that a few home favourites will always find their way into our suitcases."

Teabags were found to be the most popular item of foodstuffs taken abroad by travelling Britons, closely followed by sweets and biscuits.
