Norwich Union Insurance warns over 'car theft season'

Autumn is the peak time for car thefts, Norwich Union Insurance warns.

The insurance provider claims that vehicle owners should take extra care of their cars' security in September, October and November, as these are the months in which motor theft is most rife.

Nigel Bartram, motor underwriting manager at Norwich Union Insurance, says the ongoing increase in car theft during autumn could be attributed to a number of factors.

"Most obvious is the shorter daylight hours – we all know that thieves prefer to work in the dark," he explains.

"And, after enjoying the summer evenings outdoors, many of us look forward to spending time indoors, which in many cases means we're not using our car as much in the evenings."

Norwich Union Insurance also often receives claims where cars containing pre-Christmas shopping have been stolen in the run-up to the festive season.
