Legal & General Insurance warns students over valuables

Hi-tech gadgets have increased the home contents value of students and Legal & General is warning that they should not only take out home contents insurance, but also protect their possessions against theft.

The average value of students' possessions that they keep in their digs now stands at £13,358, according to Legal & General.

The insurance provider points out that this amount is almost equivalent to the average level of student debt, which a YouGov study in July estimated at £13,525.

During the summer, a third of full-time students bought portable electrical equipment. One in five of these purchased an iPod or mp3 player.

This shopping has boosted the average value of contents kept in a student's bedroom to £2,132. Legal & General points out that this is nearly £1,000 more than in other bedrooms across the country.

Andy Dawson, operations director at Legal & General's General Insurance business, said in addition to PCs, laptops and mobile phones, students often also have their own TVs and DVD players.

He added: "So it is worth checking that their insurance cover is at an adequate level and whether there are any limits on high risk items, such as computers."
