RAC calls for change to driver attitudes

LONDON, UK - A spokeswoman for the RAC Foundation, Nina Arnott, has said that the there is a need to change driver's attitudes which have become hardened to offences such as speeding and driving without insurance because of the perceived revenue-inclined nature of calming measures such as speed cameras.

With almost 5,000 speed cameras on Britain's roads, driving groups are becoming increasingly sceptical that many traffic-calming measures are simply revenue collecting methods used by the Government.

Speaking on Sky News this morning, Ms. Arnott said: "People have very hardened attitudes towards speeding and I think that motorists in particular feel under attack."

"There are so many fines out there, there are so many measures to raise revenue from motorists that people see speed cameras as just there to raise revenue. It hardens their attitude and it makes them very resilient to tactics to make them reduce speed or change their attitudes."

Ms. Arnott concluded that the only way, therefore to reduce speeding was to “look at driver behaviour and addressing the cause of the problem as opposed to the symptoms”.
