Homeowners to benefit from Direct Line flooding advice

An increased risk of flooding due to rising spring tides has prompted Direct Line to offer homeowners pre-flood advice.

The Environment Agency has warned that from October 7th to the 10th inclusive, spring tides in the UK will be higher than their usual levels. Although alone this should not cause flooding, severe weather at these times could.

Direct Line urges homeowners to contact the Environment Agency or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in order to assess the risk of flooding to their home and the precautions they can take as a result.

Speaking to the BBC, Peta Denham from the Environment Agency stated: "Although flooding is dreadful, being prepared for it makes it easier to recover afterwards and means you don't lose irreplaceable items like family photos."

Homeowners who are affected by flooding are advised to get in touch with their home insurer immediately. Direct Line's 24 hour emergency helpline will supply the necessary advice for customers in the event of a flood.

Aside from insuring home and contents, Direct Line recommends certain safeguards against the threat of flooding, including the safe keeping of documents and creating a flood emergency kit.
