Research undertaken by Direct Line home insurance Home Insurance has revealed that children in the UK have pestered their parents for gadgets to the tune of £20 billion.

The 14 to 18-year-old age group has been found to possess the most expensive bedroom accessories with the average contents worth £2,127.

Twenty per cent of parents questioned said that they scrimped on their own luxuries in order to provide their children with expensive goods, highlighting the growing need for an insurance policy that covers such home contents.

Andrew Lowe, spokesperson for Direct Line home insurance Home Insurance, stated: "It is important that parents keep track of any expensive purchases that they make for their children and ensure that they are accounted for under their home insurance policy".

Though spending on children's bedroom goods is £1,498 on average, the money may well not be going to good use with the survey's findings showing the average child is in their bedroom for only 14 waking hours per week.

Direct Line home insurance offers customers a reduction of 50 per cent when buildings and content insurance are purchased together.
