Research undertaken by American Express reveals that medical claims from European holiday makers account for a total of nearly a third of all holiday insurance claims.

Holiday makers are urged to take out adequate insurance cover to protect against huge medical fees that can be clocked up when out of the UK.

According to the research that incorporated the views of 10,000 American Express insurance customers, the average holiday insurance claim was £291.

Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services, remarked: "There are two key things to look for when buying a good travel insurance policy to cover any potential medical claims, does the insurer ask about your health now and does the insurer offer at least £1 million of medical and repatriation cover?"

Treatment costs can range from anywhere between £600 for gastro-enteritis to £15,000 for severe bronchitis, says American Express.

American Express Travel Insurance has a range of different policies to meet the specific needs of the individual.

Additionally, taking out an American Express Travel Insurance policy offers the customer access to a 24-hour emergency hotline that provides information and support in the event of an emergency while on holiday.
