Churchill Car Insurance: Brits shop uninsured drivers

Members of the public are more likely to report uninsured drivers than other types of offences, suggests Churchill Car Insurance.

Research by Churchill Car Insurance suggests that members of the public are more likely to report uninsured drivers than other types of offence.

Churchill Car Insurance found that 29 per cent of those questioned would have no qualms about reporting an insured driver even if that person was a family member or friend.

Allied to this, 'honest' members of the public proved to be very wary of uninsured drivers with 87 per cent claiming they would not get in a vehicle that was to be driven by an uninsured driver.

The fixed rate penalty for an uninsured driver stands at £200, a figure Frances Browning, spokesperson for Churchill Insurance, believes is too lenient on the offender.

Ms Browning said: "It is obvious that drivers in the UK feel the current fixed penalty for uninsured driving is far too low, with 35 per cent claiming the fine should be increased to at least £1,000 putting it in line with being caught without a TV licence – a considerably less serious offence."

Churchill Car Insurance also found that the public's perception of the penalty for driving uninsured differed greatly from the actual fine. Over half (58 per cent) imagined the fine to be up to £2,000.

When taking out Churchill Car Insurance cover customers can take advantage of up to 65 per cent no claims discount, guaranteed repairs for five years and 24-hour accident recovery.
