Millions of drivers will not shun their cars, says swiftcover

As debate over climate change intensifies, 13.2 million UK drivers have announced they would not reduce their car usage, research by swiftcover has found.

The UK's first and only 100 per cent online insurer discovered that 59 per cent of drivers would consider finding alternative transport for less than one day a week.

This means that 13.2 million motorists would not attempt to protect the environment by leaving their car at home. A total of 27 per cent of drivers said that even if motoring costs doubled they would still not think about cutting down their mileage.

Chief executive officer of swiftcover Andrew Blowers stated: "The research overwhelming proves Britain's drivers, although open to buying an environmentally-friendly car, are simply unable to give up the car for the essential journeys in their daily lives."

He added that he did not believe "financial levies" would solve the problem and other solutions needed to be looked at. He urged the government to instead work with car manufacturers to develop greener motoring options.

Environmentally positive news did arise from the research as 97 per cent of UK motorists announced they would consider buying a greener car, though 73 per cent of those questioned said this relied on a cheaper price.

The company offers car insurance that is available 100 per cent online, as swiftcover claims that by getting rid of call centres and middle men, the service is therefore a lot faster and more customer friendly.
