American Express wants 'passive plastic' discarded

American Express is urging plastic card holders to ditch unrewarding cards and help make a difference for charity.

Citing National Giving Week (16th to 22nd October) as a good start point, American Express wants the 43 per cent of UK card holders that offer no rewards to actively seek an alternative in the form of the American Express RED .

The research undertaken by American Express shows that the majority of people are all for the idea, with 86 per cent claiming they would like some of their money to go to charity.

Vice president of UK partnerships at American Express Kate Harris declared: "This research shows that many credit card holders still aren't getting anything back for their spending, but by making a small change to their wallet, they could collectively make a big difference to good causes."

The American Express RED is designed to give a donation on behalf of cardholders. So for every pound spent on the card, at least one per cent goes to Global Fund-financed programmes such as fighting Aids in Africa.

Once more than £5,000 has been spent on the card annually, the donation rises to 1.25 per cent on every pound. Also, American Express RED will give a £5 donation if cardholders use the card in the first month.
