Wealthy homeowners and renters 'risking ID fraud'

Those most likely to become victims of ID fraud are the wealthiest homeowners as well as people renting accommodation, new research has discovered.

Experian, a global information solutions provider, quizzed 4,000 people victims who had utilised both the company's Victims of Fraud service and its CreditExpert website that monitors accounts so ID fraud can be detected efficiently.

The results of the research can be found in the Experian Victims of Fraud Dossier and it showed that London currently faces the largest problem of ID fraud in the UK

A total of 54 areas in the UK were flagged as being very high risk locations for fraudulent activity with 34 of these areas within the M25 and more than half of this figure in London itself.

Director of consumer affairs at Experian Jill Stevens declared: "The Victims of Fraud Dossier is the first major project of its kind. We hope it will provide everyone concerned with a better understanding of identity fraud, the crime and its victims."

The research showed that 82 per cent of victims did not report the crime to the police and of the cases of ID fraud reported, only seven per cent led to a prosecution.

Experian Group Limited is a FTSE100 index constituent and has 12,500 staff in 32 countries. The company's annual sales are over £1.7 billion.
