Halifax Home Insurance warning for Bonfire Night

Halifax Home Insurance has warned homeowners to be careful this November, after six million Britons admitted to using lethal fire accelerants to start outside fires.

According to a study from Halifax Home Insurance, a massive 1.7 million Brits use petrol to start fires, while a further 1.2 million use highly flammable aerosols.

Astoundingly, 600,000 people surveyed by Halifax Home Insurance admitted to using perfumes to ignite a fire.

Also featuring on Halifax Home Insurance's list of dangerous fire accelerators were mentholated spirits, lager and white spirits, which a massive 2.6 million people claimed to have used to get fires going.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Using combustible or explosive materials such as petrol or white spirits to light a bonfire is extremely dangerous and could easily result in a fire that is uncontrollable.

"Halifax Home Insurance is urging Britons to remember they need to take reasonable care, otherwise they may invalidate their insurance policies."

Ms Emmott added that figures from Halifax Home Insurance show that Britons have caused £296 million worth of damage to their homes and gardens.
