Fraud is 'worse' in reality than the web

Real-life fraud is a more common occurrence than that which occurs in cyberspace, according to new research undertaken by PayPal.

A total of 35 per cent of people in the UK have fallen victim to fraud resulting from having their wallet or purse stolen, compared to 15 per cent of UK citizens who have suffered as a consequence of fraud on the internet.

The findings of PayPal's survey also highlight that it is in the workplace where 2.5 million people are becoming victims of theft and should therefore exercise more caution when leaving valuables unattended or reading bank details over the phone in earshot of colleagues.

Neil Edwards, head of financial planning at PayPal UK, remarked: "The workplace is the second most vulnerable place for fraud and consumers simply assume they are safe and trust those around them as much as family and therefore read out confidential bank details over the phone when purchasing something without a second thought."

Mr Edwards went on to state that PayPal offers customers a safe option when purchasing goods over the internet and is a welcome tonic for those uncomfortable with disclosing financial details online.

According to the company's website, PayPal "allows any business or consumer with an email address to securely, conveniently and cost-effectively send and receive payments online".
