Video banking pilot launched by first direct

In collaboration with mobile phone network 3, first direct is set to become the first UK bank to offer video banking to its customers.

The first video calls will be taken by first direct staff this week during a pilot scheme to discover if video banking can break into the mainstream.

Chris Pilling, first direct's chief executive, stated his intention to gain as much information as possible about the video banking initiative as well as hailing the bank for taking the lead in shaping banking options such as being the first bank to offer 24-hour telephone banking in 1989.

Mr Pilling remarked: "first direct customers will be the first in Britain to try out video banking from their mobile. We're always keen to pioneer the future of money but want consumers to help us shape the future."

He added: "Our aim is to create services that use cutting edge technology to meet real customer needs."

To complement the launch of first direct online banking, a website has been created in order to offer customers the chance to top-up prepay mobiles and access mobile-friendly videos.

At the Your Money awards in July of this year, first direct was awarded Best Online ISA Provider.
