Homeowners told, 'check insurance policies this Christmas'

Customers are being urged to check the small print of their insurance policies to ensure that their Christmas presents are fully covered this yuletide season.

Some insurance providers such as Tesco, Churchill and esure have been found by Moneysupermarket.com to automatically increase their cover by ten per cent to incorporate new gifts received at Christmas but some do not offer such a service resulting in some people being left under-insured.

Many households will see a significant rise in the value of their home's contents this Christmas and consequently, Richard Mason, director of insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, has warned homeowners that a rethink of their insurance policy could be of benefit after the new year as some provider's offers end in mid-January.

Mr Mason stated: "For most people, the thought of being broken into is the last thing on their mind at this time of year."

"However, with new expensive gifts and gadgets in the house, it can be one of the most attractive times of the year for an opportunist thief," he continued.

The government's Lets Keep Crime Down initiative suggests that homeowners keep their presents out of sight of potential burglars rather than 'advertise' them in the window and also dispose of packaging discreetly that may show a criminal that expensive gifts are inside the house.
