uSwitch urges consumers to demand better customer service

Gas and electricity consumers are being urged to demand better customer service from their energy companies by switching to a different supplier.

According to the price comparison website uSwitch, levels of customer satisfaction in the energy sector have plummeted in recent years, while energy bills have soared.

It says that 48 per cent of consumers are dissatisfied with their current energy provider, and 60 per cent do not believe they are getting value for money. A further 65 per cent are not satisfied that their supplier has them on the best deal.

Overall levels of satisfaction among gas and electricity customers have fallen by an average of seven per cent over the last year. Yet despite this uSwitch says that ten million people have never bothered to switch energy suppliers, and it urges them to do so, not only to get better customer service, but also to save money.

New figures from The Motley Fool reveal that Britons could reduce their annual fuel bill by up to £300 if they switched, providing a welcome relief after a series of price hikes over the last year.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said: "The worrying thing for all of us is that whilst prices have gone skyward customer service has gone down across the board. It's not so much a case of energy companies resting on their laurels, as holidaying on them.

"Until consumers say enough is enough, there is no pressure on energy providers to right the myriad of wrongs they are currently peddling under the guise of customer service and value for money. We know that some 7.4 million customers are thinking about switching and we implore them to do it now."
