Ethics determining Xmas gifts, says study

Over half of residents in the UK have stated their intention to bear in mind ethical concerns in terms of planning for the Christmas period, according to Friends Provident.

Julia Dreblow, socially responsible investment marketing manager at Friends Provident, stated that she believed the research to be "timely" adding that people were becoming "more ethically astute".

The research showed that three million people found Christmas to have become too commercialised and 29 per cent explained that by giving away ethical presents, the yuletide period was imbued with more meaning.

Ms Dreblow commented: "The research also looks very positive for companies with sound ethical reputations, as many shoppers will be voting with their feet this Christmas - strongly favouring these companies over and above their less reputable counterparts."

According to the study, people in the 20 and 30-year-old age bracket were found to be the most ethically minded.

Friends Provident is a FTSE 100 Index company that can chart its history back to 1832.
