To ensure that they do not fall victim to internet fraudsters this Christmas, online shoppers have been encouraged to register with anti-fraud services by the payments association, Apacs.

With plastic card spending set to reach a total of £3 billion during the festive season this year, the importance of card security is paramount and those purchasing goods on the internet are urged to make use of e-commerce solutions such as Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode.

Shoping online looks set to increase in popularity considering that research undertaken by Apacs found 85 per cent of people thought the high street was both too crowded and overly-stressful.

Sandra Quinn, director of corporate communications at the association, remarked: "Our research has shown that nearly half of those who shop online do so more at Christmas than any other time of the year and just over a quarter of that group will do about half their Christmas shopping online."

Customers are urged by Apacs to take advantage of the MasterCard and Visa payment solutions as they require a password to be provided by the cardholder, tightening security and reducing the risk of fraud as a result.
