Home insurance 'may not cover Christmas gifts'

The value of home contents will rise over the festive period due to a surge in the amount of expensive gifts purchased, but at the same time homeowners are warned that some insurance policies are not providing adequate cover.

One in seven policies have been found not to offer additional cover over Christmas by MoneyExpert as insurance companies calculate their figures based on the value of contents at the start of the cover period.

Cornhill Direct recently calculated that an average of £2,200.48 will be spent this Christmas, this figure contributing to the value of household goods.

However, MoneyExpert says that 28 per cent of insurers are not offering customers any extra cover of the yuletide season, potentially leaving them out of pocket.

Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert, remarked: "All the presents piled up under the tree can amount to a huge amount and can – if the worst comes to the worst – be a real nightmare if you have to claim."

Mark Bishop, spokesman for Cornhill Direct, has urged homeowners to be extra vigilant this Christmas so they do not fall victim of theft.
