Legal & General offers household tips

As the wintry weather creeps in, Legal & General are urging homeowners to check their properties to make sure they are well protected from the elements.

The past few weeks have already brought with them a series of storms, gale force winds and even tornadoes and over the coming months the weather may only get worse.

This is why Legal & General says homeowners should make sure their property is well maintained and that heating systems, loft insulation and water pipes are all kept in good condition.

It says that while insurance will protect against damage done as a result of severe weather, there are steps that homeowners can take to ensure that they avoid this damage in the first place.

Andy Dawson, operations director at Legal & General's general insurance business, said: "Following the practical advice we have outlined may help customers to reduce the risk of having to make a claim and minimising the amount of disruption experienced if they do."

Legal & General's advice includes checking that pipes and water tanks are fully lagged, keeping drains and gutters free of debris, repairing loose roof tiles and slates and making sure windows and frames are firmly fixed with no possible gaps for rain to penetrate.
