Barclaycard and Oyster unite

Holders of a Barclaycard will be able to swipe it on the London Underground in the same way as they would an Oyster card from next year.

A pilot scheme will be run in the English capital next year following a deal struck between TranSys, the firm who operate London's Oyster card system and Barclaycard.

Barclaycards will be placed on receiver pads in the same way as the Oyster card, which will allow underground users a more efficient way to pay for their journey.

Robert Kenley, head of credit cards at price comparison website Moneysupermarket, remarked: "This deal is a significant step from a household name in the financial arena and this type of innovation is very much welcomed in the cards market.

"Next year customers who use either a Barclays debit or credit card will be able make three types of payment on the same card; secure, high value transactions using chip and pin faster, convenient payments for low value transactions in retailers and London Underground journeys using Oyster."

An estimated six million people use an Oyster card in London and a cumulative total of 38 million journeys are made daily on the tube and bus.
