Honesty is the best policy, says Alliance & Leicester

People should take an honest perspective of their spending habits and lifestyle to determine how to effectively plan for their financial future, according to a spokesperson for Alliance & Leicester.

Steve Gracey said that individuals must judge whether or not they can afford their current lifestyle and his comments come in the wake of a warning issued by Alliance & Leicester about debt that can accompany using store cards.

The research showed that 23 per cent of people were using store cards as a means of paying for Christmas-related items.

Mr Gracey said: "For very many people, taking out one loan saves them money and is a lot easier than writing cheques here, there and everywhere and arranging direct debits. Research that we have done in the past shows that some people have difficulty remembering to pay off their debts every month.

"Whether it is the minimum payment or just a little bit more off their credit card, some people have difficulty remembering to do that."
