Direct Line Home Insurance warning to bargain hunters

Shoppers stocking up on bargains in the January sales have been urged to ensure their home insurance covers all their new possessions.

Direct Line Home Insurance expects this year to be a bumper one in terms of spending on sales items, claiming that some £5.5 billion could be spent in the first month of 2007.

A third of respondents in a Direct Line Home Insurance survey said they are hoping to pick up a good deal on electronic goods such as digital TVs, laptops and music players.

Clothes and footwear also feature high on the bargain hunters' lists, with 42 per cent heading to the shops for new fashions at lower prices.

Direct Line Home Insurance also found that 45 per cent of respondents have saved up through 2006 in order to splash out in the January sales.

But they need to bear in mind that all their new possessions will have a knock-on effect on their home insurance, Direct Line warned.

"Shoppers may be picking up many bargains this January, but with all the extra possessions in the home this Christmas, it's important that homeowners make sure all of their home contents are fully covered," said Direct Line Home Insurance spokesperson Carmel McCarthy.

As a result, Direct Line Home Insurance is offering a ten per cent increase in cover over the festive season to help protect all the extra goods in policyholders' homes at this time.

The insurer said people should use this window between December 18th and January 18th "to assess whether their policy is adequate and up to date".

All across the UK, shoppers descended on high streets on Boxing Day to take advantage of sales but nowhere more so than in London's Oxford Street, where some bargain hunters started queuing outside stores as early at 03:30 GMT.
