Staying with British Gas could save pounds

By sticking with British Gas, consumers in the UK could ultimately find themselves better off, despite advice to the contrary, according to personal finance website the Motley Fool.

Ofgem, the energy regulator, recommends that people should shop around before settling for their gas or electricity supplier and could in the process save themselves anything up to £150.

However, the Motley Fool disputes this and says that staying with British Gas and taking advantage of two products, the Green Click Energy Paperless Billing Tariff and the Click Energy Paperless Billing Tariff, could result in cheaper energy bills.

David Kuo, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, says: "Loyalty can be a wonderful attribute to have, but not if you are being charged too much for being faithful."

He added: "However, thanks to our energy-comparison partner, Xelector (2), we have found a couple of ways for millions of households to stay with British Gas and save money at the same time."

A total of four million people switched their energy supplier, according to Ofgem, in the first ten months of 2006.
