Halifax Home Insurance warns of January burglaries

Burglaries are most likely to occur during the first month of the year, according to Halifax Home Insurance, who claimed that around 76,000 break-ins take place in January.

This is around 26 per cent more than in any other month - a rise that Halifax Home Insurance attributes to an increase in valuables left in the house after Christmas.

Halifax Home Insurance also said that during this month, a burglary takes place every 35 seconds, with 40 per cent of the total occurring during the day.

And Britons are paying the price of this crime, with Halifax Home Insurance estimating that victims are robbed of goods worth around £170 million.

"We tend to see a rise in burglaries during January as burglars know that it is the time when our homes are packed with lots of new and expensive items, ranging from electrical goods to jewellery," commented Vicky Emmott, Halifax Home Insurance senior underwriter.

She added that people should always stay vigilant as burglars are opportunistic and will strike whenever they get a chance.

Official statistics show that between January and March last year, 158,070 burglaries were reported in England and Wales. This accounted for three incidents per 1,000 members of the population.
