Brits take holidays further, says Barclays Travel Insurance

British holidaymakers are heading further away on breaks during the festive season, according to research by Barclays Travel Insurance.

While city breaks to Paris and Dublin remained among the top five locations for holidays during Christmas and New Year, Britons are also making more long-haul trips to Sydney, Dubai and New York.

Barclays Travel Insurance found that cricket fans have boosted British tourist numbers in Melbourne by 140 per cent, while Sydney saw an increase of 25 per cent.

And British holidaymakers weren't afraid to splash the cash abroad, with spending by British holidaymakers up by 178 per cent in Melbourne.

Both Hong Kong and Phuket also attracted British travellers, which Barclays Travel Insurance ascribed to them being stop-off points en route to Australia.

Mark Till, marketing director for Barclays Insurance, said Britons are lured to more long-haul destinations as flights become cheaper.

"Of course this year the numbers travelling to Australia were boosted further by the added attraction of the Ashes taking place whilst Europe's slow start to the ski season due to a lack of snow has also encouraged tourists to look elsewhere," he added.

More than 15 million people are expected to book holidays during Christmas and February, research by Sainsbury's Bank revealed.

The bank's travel insurance manager Robert O'May commented: "At this time of year when people are planning their next trip its easy to get excited about destinations, resorts and even flights but travel insurance may seem a little mundane.

"It's worth remembering that shopping around for insurance is just as important as you could save against travel agent prices."
