Ethical investments proving popular, says CIS

Socially responsible investments (SRIs) are witnessing an increase in their popularity, with these products outperforming the rest of the market last year, according to CIS.

Attributed to a growing eco-economy, many businesses have decided to jump on board the green bandwagon and commit to environmentally friendly investments.

Such an SRI that performed well during 2006 was the CIS Sustainable Leaders Trust, finishing seventh out of all ethical investments in the UK.

Mike Fox, fund manager for CIS Sustainable Leaders Trust, commented: "Many businesses have become very profitable by tapping into the eco-pound and this has led to takeover interest from larger companies seeking to increase their share of a market that can no longer be considered niche."

CIS Sustainable Leaders Trust granted its customers a return of 31.8 per cent up to December 31st last year, according to Mr Fox.

Highlighting the boom in the eco-economy over the past months are the figures released by the Co-operative Bank that show ethical consumerism amounted to over £29 billion in 2005.
