Eight million Brits not acting on green concerns

The amount of people in the UK who talk a good game regarding environmental issues but do not practice what they preach is around 8 million.

Prudential Travel Insurance ascertained that although Brits expressed their backing for the government's implementation of higher air tax for short-haul flights, 75 per cent of them would not consider cutting down on the amount of flights such as these that they take.

It seems that the government's steps to cut down on carbon emissions are going unnoticed by some with 26 per cent not aware of the Air Passenger Duty increases.

Phil Southgate, at Prudential Travel Insurance, said: "We all have a responsibility to protect the environment so it will be interesting to see over the next few years what impact if any the tax will have on the travel industry and whether travellers will become more conscious of the amount of flights they take each year."

Only three per cent of those quizzed said they would actually cut back on the amount of flights they would make after the increase in air tax.

Chancellor Gordon Brown's pre-Budget report outlined a seven per cent rise in the cost of a short-haul ticket after Air Passenger Duty was increased from £5 to £10.
