Halifax advises homeowners ahead of big freeze

With adverse weather conditions set to hit Britain over the next few days, Halifax Home Insurance has urged homeowners to take precautions against freezing pipes.

Should the media reports hold true and snow does strike the UK, frozen water pipes could result in a major headache for many homeowners and Halifax claims the loft is where the majority of pipes freeze up.

By insulating pipes, people will protect themselves against the prospect of a crisis in the home but in the event of the worst case scenario, homeowners are advised to contact Halifax Home Insurance to find out what the next step should be.

Vicky Emmott, from Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Water from a burst pipe within a loft space can very quickly cause damage to plaster ceilings, wall plaster, kitchen units, electrical wiring and decoration, as well as carpets, beds, electrical items and other contents within a property."

Steps to be taken ahead of the big freeze include ensuring that loft insulation is not put under the water tank, insulating both the sides and top of the water tank and for anyone leaving their home over a period of time, they should switch off the water supply or alternatively keep the heating turned on.
