Older people lead price comparison sites boom

Online price comparison websites are becoming increasingly popular among older Britons, according to a new survey.

Birmingham Midshires has found that people aged over 45 are increasingly logging on to websites such as Pricerunner and Kelkoo to cut the cost of their purchases.

A report by the provider found that 59 per cent of this age group use price comparison sites, with nearly three-quarters of those who use the services cutting household bills as a result.

Impartial advice on financial products is also popular, with sites such as Moneyfacts and Moneysupermarket being consulted by 14 per cent of over-45s.

Jason Robinson, director of savings operations at Birmingham Midshires, said older people are "clearly switched on in their ability to use the internet for creating and managing wealth".

He added that the over-45s could probably teach their kids a thing or two about shopping around for the best services and products.

However, not all older people feel comfortable using the internet to conduct their affairs.

Older people's charity Help the Aged has argued this week that pensioners are being disadvantaged as a result of advanced technologies such as chip and pin.
