UK shoppers look online

Online shopping is steadily growing and by 2020 is set to account for almost four tenths of the total UK retail sales market, says price comparison website uSwitch.

New research has shown that approximately eight million UK consumers currently shop online for an average of two hour per day, highlighting the popularity of purchasing products in this way.

Furthermore, online shopping for goods and services adds up to a collective spend of just under £10,000 per household on average. With cheaper prices being found online, uSwitch has predicted that consumers can save up to £500 a month by shopping on the internet.

Steve Weller, head of communication services at uSwitch, said "The dramatic surge in online shopping last Christmas shows that British consumers are already savvy to the benefits of buying goods and services over the internet."

This year, UK consumers are forecasted to spend a cumulative £40 billion online, a figure that is set to rise to £162 billion by 2020.

Highlighting the savings to be had, uSwitch found that purchasing travel and leisure activities online resulted in savings of 15 per cent on average.
