Time is money when waiting for the tradesman

More than £1 billion worth of annual leave in the UK is used up on employees waiting for tradesmen to arrive at their house, new research has found.

According to Churchill, £1.1 billion goes on such circumstances and this equates to a total of almost 13.5 million days off which were taken during last year to wait for the tradesmen to arrive.

The overall effect of this waiting game is magnified when considering that over the course of a working lifetime, the average person will use up 62 days of their holiday on waiting for household deliveries or repairs.

Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, says: "Our research clearly shows there is a hidden cost to householders when having repairs undertaken or receiving deliveries which few of us consider.

"In an emergency, home insurers often offer help lines providing contact details of reputable tradesmen even if a claim isn't being made."

Wages lost due to waiting for the tradespeople to arrive is an average of £116 per person, the research found. People citied that they would rather be at home to let the workers in so that they would be safe in the knowledge that work is getting done correctly.
