Direct debit can add to car insurance costs

Motorists are being encouraged to shop around to find the most competitive car insurance premiums.

According to new research carried out by price comparison site MoneyExpert.com, the majority of car insurance providers charge their customers extra for paying by direct debit.

MoneyExpert estimates that the average direct debit charge for customers is 22.7 per cent, which could add an extra £182 to the average annual policy of £806.

According to Sean Gardener, chief executive of the group, it may be beneficial for consumers to pay for a motor insurance policy upfront on credit cards to counteract the potential of direct debit charges.

Mr Gardner said: "Motor insurance premiums are at an all-time high and experts reckon they will continue to climb as both the number of claims and the value of claims continues to increase.

"Motorists can still get good deals by shopping around and you should always review your insurance every year," he added.
