Co-operative mortgages 'eco-friendly'

The Co-operative Bank is launching eco-friendly mortgages which possess an "excellent [interest] rate" and provide customers with "peace of mind".

The group is offering a series of discounts on its two and three-year mortgages and rolled out three new discounted rates yesterday.

The Co-op mortgages include three-year standard first-time buyer, core and low rate mortgages, possessing lower interest rates of 5.89, 5.89 and 5.79 per cent respectively.

Higher lending charges will also not be imposed upon buyers up to a loan-to-value rate of 95 percent, which the group estimates could save borrowers £2,000 over the duration of a mortgage.

All of the group's customers will also receive a free home energy report, which will allow their property's energy efficiency to be assessed and improved.

For each Co-op mortgage taken up, the group will also be offering annual donations to Climate Care to help tackle global warming.

John Barker, head of mortgages at the Co-operative Bank, says: "With the current climate of uncertainty surrounding base rate changes, these new products offer customers an excellent rate and peace of mind that their rate will remain fixed at this level for the initial period of the loan."
