Sainsbury's Bank: Pet insurance 'key'

Consumers who cherish their cat or dog are being encouraged to take out some pet cover to cater for any eventuality.

According to research carried out by Sainsbury's Bank, some 75 per cent of homeowners do not purchase cover for their pets, despite pet thefts having been more frequent in recent times.

The group also found that over half of pet owners have had to take their pet to the vet unexpectedly.

Natascha Virtue, spokesperson for Sainsbury's Bank, described taking out pet insurance cover as "essential".

She added: "You just never know when your pet might fall ill or have an accident and you really want to make sure that you are covered for any unexpected vet bills which could prove prohibitive."

Ms Virtue also told how pet insurance pays out against any illness an animal has or any accidents that pets need surgery for.
