Halifax Home Insurance gives water leak advice

Homeowners are being encouraged to take a number of steps to prevent against water damage to their properties.

According to research carried out by Halifax Home Insurance, water damage causes some £1.8 billion worth of damage to the 3.3 million homes affected by water leaks each year.

The main contributors to the "water everywhere" predicament are flooding washing machines, leaking showers and taps left running.

To negate the potential damage caused by water leaks, Halifax Home Insurance advises that homeowners check their water pipes on a regular basis and to make sure that taps are always turned off after use.

Purchasing a comprehensive home insurance package might also prove a beneficial move, with over a third of Britons not possessing buildings insurance paying up to £560 on average per incident.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance, described how modern trends are increasing the risk of water damaging a property.

"The trend for homes with multiple bathrooms and the current vogue for wet rooms have significantly increased the risk of water leaks and damage in the home," she said.
