Smokers face higher insurance premiums

Smokers can face far higher premium costs on life insurance packages, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has said.

A spokesperson for Biba said that smoking "certainly" affects life insurance premiums and non-smokers will "get a better deal at the end of the day".

According to Richard Eagling, a spokesperson for Moneyfacts.co.uk, the speed with which a person stopping smoking would have an effect on insurance premiums could take a number of years.

"Some will say a year after smoking, some will say five years, it really depends on who you are covered with," he added.

The news comes following yesterday's National No Smoking Day, a health awareness campaign that helps smokers who want to quit the habit.

Some 1.5 million people made an attempt to stop smoking as a result of the day, while millions of others used the day as a catalyst for change also.
