Hargreaves Lansdown: Isas better than endowment policies

Investment in an Isa may provide a greater amount of financial security to consumers than an endowment policy, an expert at Hargreaves Lansdown said.

Ben Yearsley, investment manager at Hargreaves Lansdown, has said that more than one in ten endowment firms have delivered returns below policy holder's contributions in the past ten years.

According to many companies offering such packages, poor returns have been caused by the after effects of a slow market experienced between 2000 and 2003.

Commenting upon which investment would make more financial sense, Mr Yearsley said it depended upon what the investor was looking for.

"I think that the lack of transparency is an issue with endowment policies in terms of charging and performance and, in a lot of cases, you are probably better off with a normal regular savings plan into an Isa or something like that," he added.

The Invesco Perpetual Income fund was described as a "great" fund to invest in by Mr Yearsley.
