Halifax Home Insurance: Watch out for garden thieves

Homeowners are being encouraged to take measures to protect themselves against the theft of garden implements this year.

The call from Halifax Home Insurance comes before the official start of British summertime on March 25th, the traditional time when Britons roll out their often valuable garden furniture and equipment.

However, according to the group, claims for garden thefts usually triple between March and August, with the average claim costing £400.

To avert the possibility of losing valuable garden furniture, Britons are being advised by Halifax to ensure sheds, gates and garages are locked at all times.

Other recommended measures include joining a neighbourhood watch scheme and putting gravel on drives.

"Homeowners can forget to pay as much attention to security outside the house as they do inside," said Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax.

"With many people realising how much value they can add to their property by improving their gardens, there are now rich pickings for thieves, and now is the time to take steps to avoid becoming the next victim," she added.

Customers buying Halifax home insurance packages online will receive a 25 per cent discount.
