Alliance & Leicester campaigns against stamp duty

Alliance & Leicester has announced that it will be campaigning for consumers looking to get onto the property ladder to be made exempt from stamp duty.

The news follows chancellor Gordon Brown's decision not to raise the threshold upon which one per cent stamp duty is paid from £125,000 in today's Budget.

According to research carried out by the group, almost two thirds of first-time buyers are searching for homes which are above the £125,000 threshold.

With house prices having risen by 11 per cent in the last year, according to government figures, the average first-time buyer needs over £150,000 to be able to make their first investment in bricks and mortar.

"First-time buyers are a vital part of the housing market and the government should be doing everything it can to encourage more people to become homeowners," said Stephen Leonard, director of Alliance & Leicester mortgages.

Alliance & Leicester mortgages come in a range of different formats, including packages for existing premier and premier direct account customers.

Fixed-rate, tracker and discount options are more of the Alliance & Leicester mortgages available.
