Halifax warns home improvers

Home improvement-hungry British homeowners are being encouraged to make sure they possess a comprehensive insurance package to cater for any eventualities.

According to research carried out by Halifax Home Insurance, Britons spend almost £10 billion each year on household improvements.

However, the group estimates that bodged DIY jobs cost £670 million to fix, which could become problematic as over a third of British homeowners do not have buildings insurance.

Over a fifth also do not have home contents insurance either, meaning that they will be financially exposed should they damage their home in the event of a DIY accident.

"We'd advise anyone planning any major improvements to their home to employ qualified and reputable tradesmen, rather than going it alone," said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager at Halifax.

"Indeed trying to tackle certain areas that you are not qualified for, such as electrics or plumbing, could invalidate your home insurance and leave you liable for the cost of any subsequent damage," she added.

With Halifax insurance products, homeowners are covered on standard items such as TVs, videos, computer equipment and glass in furniture in mirrors.
