Halifax: Insuring against home subsidence 'vital'

With subsidence in British homes believed to have increased by 50 per cent since 2002, homeowners are being urged to make sure they are adequately covered.

With summer approaching and the weather warming up, incidences of subsidence are likely to increase, with Halifax Home Insurance claiming that UK insurers paid out £302 million for subsidence claims last year.

Neil Curling, structural claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, described how there are a number of ways in which homeowners can avert the possible crisis of subsidence.

This includes checking surveys carefully when purchasing a home, surveying the drainage of a property and calling and contacting an insurer as soon as possible if there is any doubt.

Halifax insurance packages offer unlimited buildings cover, which entails that homeowners will never be underinsured for the cost of any rebuilding work.

New customers who are looking to comprehensively protect their home against the threat of subsidence will also receive a 25 per cent discount when buying a Halifax insurance package online.

Mr Curling said: "People don't knowingly cause subsidence, but there are ways homeowners can help to reduce the risk of such damage to their home to avoid the costs, inconvenience and inevitable worry that subsidence damage brings."
