CIS: Road safety education 'crucial' for young people

A survey of young people has shown that nearly two thirds of people between the age of 15 and 25 said they had been a passenger in cars driving at speeds exceeding the legal limit.
With government figures released in 2005 indicating that some 1,297 people died in the year, with some 35 deaths and serious injuries taking place every day, Jools Townsend, head of education at road safety Brake, described how action needed to be taken.
"Now is the time for the government to take action and tackle the problem of risk-taking young drivers," urged Ms Townsend.
She added that it "has a duty to society to ensure every young person gets an education in road safety and introduce a more structured system of training and testing novices".
CIS packages are used by some 750,000 drivers in the UK.
The group, which forms part of Co-operative Financial Services, is committed to improving road safety.
