Direct Line: Consumers savvy over home contents insurance

Homeowners are becoming increasingly savvy towards the value of the contents in their homes, Direct Line has said.

Despite a recent survey carried out by Go Compare showing that more than half of adults are reluctant to read the small print when buying financial products, Carmel McCarthy, Direct Line's spokesperson, said that people seem to be more educated about insurance than ever before.

Mr McCarthy said that it was very rare for people not to have read the terms and conditions of their policy, to end up with a policy without adequate cover.

"They usually know what they can and can't claim with us so I don't think we've experienced many people who haven't read the terms and conditions of their policies," he said.

He also said: "More and more people are becoming savvy in what they actually need and what their contents are worth in their home."

Consumers were also becoming more alive to reassessing their present cover when they acquire new goods, the group said.
