Yorkshire unveils green mortgage

Yorkshire Building Society has announced details of its first home efficiency mortgage, which is being launched today.

Rolled out on a wave of climate change concern, the new offering will focus on allowing homeowners to make energy efficiency improvements to their property.

Available at a discounted rate of 5.65 per cent for five years, Yorkshire's energy efficient additional loan can be taken up for people looking to borrow between £1,000 and £15,000.

Rob Prior, product manager for mortgages at the group, said that there was an "increased consumer awareness of energy use and its effect on household bills".

"Our first step is introducing an additional loan for existing customers which will only be available for approved energy efficiency home improvements," he added.

The group anticipates that the demand for the Yorkshire mortgage will mushroom following the rolling out of home information packs in June, with the drive to improve the energy efficiency of homes set to increase dramatically.
